Knowledge is power!
Ever got confused during a class when teacher was using following cues?
- tuck in the tailbone
- pubic bone to the ribs
- open up your sitting bones towards the sides
Especially if you are following classes in the language that is not your mother tongue, these can get tricky to understand. I know from experience- even when teaching, I am looking up these words in the language of my students, because it is so essential to understand what is moving, what should be moving and what is the right focus in a certain exercise — to get the best results from your training!
Before we can sprinkle extra layer of “imagery” into our movement, we need to make sure that we at least know the basic bony structures.
Our pelvis plays essential role in our movement and our posture. Its central position determines its function, it absorbs and lets through a lot of forces coming from the ground up and going from the top down. It needs to be strong and stable and at the same time mobile.
For many years it was believed that inside of the pelvis there was NO movement, that it was one single “conglomerate”. Now it is scientifically proven that different bones that are part of pelvis can move. There are 4! Joints inside of pelvis. And we know — if there is a joint — there should be movement.
Did you know that our tailbone is a rudimentary tail? Even if we have lost the actual tail, the logic and sentiment behind it stayed. That particular part holds a lot of emotions! If our tailbone is “frozen” and unable to move for some reason (injury, muscular disturbances, traumas.) it can affect our posture and even cause headaches.
